Barcelona star Lionel Messi has rewritten the record books in his side's 6-0 win over Rayo Vallecano at home by scoring two goals in the game, taking his total tally to 228 overall in the La Liga.
The four-time world player of the year passed Argentine legend Alfredo di Stefano's mark and placed Di Stefano in a tie for a third with Spanish star Raul, who made a name for himself at Real Madrid.
According to CNN, Messi, who missed two months this season with a leg complaint, is on course to take over the top spot from Spanish legend Telmo Zarra, who scored 251 goals.
The report mentioned that Messi's goals came in the 38th and 68th minutes at the Camp Nou, with Adriano, Pedro, Alexis Sanchez and the returning Neymar chipping in with the others.
Barcelona's spectacular display against Vallecano prompted the Catalan club's website to use the word 'caviar' in describing the affair and the free-flowing football on offer served as a warning for Manchester City, which collides with the Spanish champions next week in the Champions League, the report added.
