Software manufacturer Microsoft had aimed at reviving its position in the tablet market with 'Surface' but it is the same device which has reportedly led to the company's losses in the fourth quarter.

According to CBS News, market analysts had predicted quarterly revenue of 20.7 billion dollars. However, Microsoft fell way too short of that and reported just 18.1 billion dollars and the earnings per share of 59 cents also missed the estimate of 75 cents.

Microsoft's stock tumbled more than 5 percent as the earning were 2.62 dollars per share rather than the estimated 2.75 dollars.

The report said that the bigger problem for the company has been its unending reliance on the twin profit generators of PC operating systems (Windows) and office productivity software (Office).

Microsoft's answer to the iPad is a bitter disappointment as 'Surface' seems to have sunk below the surface of the market, the report added.
