Morsi's removal branded serious breach of African Union's laws

Egypt's democratically-elected president Mohammed Morsi's removal breaches the African Union's laws, Deputy International Relations Minister Ebrahim Ebrahim has said.

Ebrahim said in Pretoria that the South African Government views Morsi's ouster as a serious breach of the African Union Constitutive Act.

According to news24, Egyptian armed forces overthrew Morsi last week, declaring he had failed the people in the country.

Ebrahim said South Africa welcomed and endorsed resolutions of the 384th meeting of the African Union Peace and Security Council, held on 5 July to discuss Egypt, the report said.

The meeting decided to suspend Egypt's participation in AU activities until the constitutional order is restoration.

Ebrahim said that the South African government considered this event as a major setback for the advancement and consolidation of democracy in Africa.

He said that South Africa was perturbed by the potential negative impact the event could have on peace, stability, and security in the region, the report added.
