Egypt's former President Mohammed Morsi is set to appeal against the jail sentence handed down to him by a court for ordering the kidnapping, torturing and killing of protesters in 2012, his lawyers said.
Morsi, along with 12 other Muslim Brotherhood members, was sentenced to 20 years in prison without parole for violence, kidnapping and torture. Morsi's defence lawyers have urged Egypt's High Court to dismiss the sentences and order a retrial for all the defendants before another criminal court, reported News24.
Morsi was Egypt's first freely-elected president and was ousted in a military coup in 2013 following mass protests against his rule. Since then, he has faced several legal cases.
A Cairo court recently sentenced Morsi to death over a mass prison break during Egypt's 2011 uprising.
