A study by a non-government organisation, Shopner Desh, has revealed that a majority of rural students in Bangladesh believe that militant activities are justified.

The study on the impact of militancy found that some 20-25% districts in Bangladesh are at risk of militant activities as some 26% students mostly of village and rural level educational institutes had received offers to join militancy, reports Dhaka Tribune.

The study showed that direct proposals were received by 49 percent students of urban level educational institutes from militants and over social media.

Some 24% respondents, who were both male and female, believe what the extremist groups propagate.

The survey was conducted among students of Bohorpur Degree College, Rajbari and North South University, Dhaka.

The survey was launched last year in September academic Bobby Hajjaj of Shopner Desh.

The study revealed that youths are targeted by extremist groups propagating an agenda that states they are protectors of Islam and that the West is attacking Islam.

Some 44% rural students and 7% urban students said they had received messages personally.
