President Pranab Mukherjee unveiled a bronze statue of former Kerala chief minister late K. Karunakaran at the Kanakakunnu Palace here today.
Speaking on the occasion, Mukherjee described Karunakaran as an outstanding politician of the contemporary period.
"He had a long and colourful legislative life. He entered political life at a young age and was member of the Praja Mandalom of Kochi, the Travancore- Kochi Assembly as well as the Kerala Legislative Assembly. He saw the evolution of the state from colonial and princely rule to a modern vibrant democracy," said Mukherjee.
"He was a versatile personality and the rare combination of a popular leader and skilled administrator. If Kerala is today a model state in terms of socio-economic indicators, it is also because of the contributions of Shri Karunakaran," he added.
