A lifelike sand sculpture of British No.1 Andy Murray, which was created in honour of his historic Wimbledon win, has reportedly been destroyed by vandals on the same night that he crashed out of the US Open tournament.

According to the Daily Express, the intricate image of Murray celebrating this summer's Wimbledon win was created by British artist Mark Anderson for his Sandworld beach display in Weymouth, Dorset.

The report said that Murray's sculpture and those of Monsters Inc. characters Mike and Sully and comic book hero Iron Man were housed in a temporary beach building.

Meanwhile, Murray's off-court income has doubled to more than ten million pounds in the last year, after he made considerable money through a string of lucrative merchandising and sponsorship deals.

Latest accounts for his company show it generated 10,013,196 pounds, up from 5.8 million pounds the previous year, and made a profit of 6,371,811 pounds for 2012.
