Mustafa Kamal denies reports of supporting Modi in general elections

National Conference (NC) leader Mustafa Kamal on Tuesday denied reports that his party would be supporting Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi in the upcoming general elections.

Dismissing the reports published by a local news agency, Mustafa Kamal said that his party believed in strengthening secular politics.

"The news attributed to me that National Conference will support Narendra Modi or NDA (National Democratic Alliance) at the centre post 2014 general election to the Parliament is wrong and I vehemently deny having said that," he said.

"I cannot even conceive this in the backdrop of the last NDA government at the centre having trashed the greater autonomy resolution of the 9th Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly in year 2000," he added.

Kamal further said that there was a need for a secular dispensation to bring about peace and prosperity.

"It is also my conviction that for peace, progress and prosperity of a country as vast and as diverse as India we need a secular dispensation as the UPA at the centre. NC (National Conference) being a constituent of UPA will go along with such a dispensation as we have done so far in the overall good of the nation and the state," Kamal added.

The BJP had on September 13 declared the Gujarat Chief Minster its prime ministerial candidate for 2014 elections.
