Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday said the country's fate is in the hands of voters, as they have an important task in deciding which way will the country proceed forward.

"There is a big responsibility that lies ahead of you in order to select a new government at the Centre. It is your verdict which will decide the fate of this country. On one hand ,you have divisive forces in the form of the BJP, which keeps changing its tactics as suits their comfort from time to time. On the other hand, you have the Congress, which believes in brotherhood and living in peace with each other. It is you who know it very well that how they (BJP) were running a mining mafia when they running their government here, and because of a strong indictment from the state Lokayukta, that their own chief minister had to be sent to jail. You are a witness as to how women were mistreated during the rule of the BJP," Sonia said.

The Congress president stated, "the UPA Government for the last ten years has done work for the benefit of all sections of the society. We have focused on the other backward classes and those who are marginalized in the society. We not only say it but we also accomplish on our promises. We not only brought efficiency in the government with the help of Right to Information, but also passed the food security bill, so that everyone gets right to food."

Sonia Gandhi targetted the BJP and its prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi for creating a false impression amongst people, as if it was only Gujarat and not other states which has not developed all these years.

"There are some people who make tall promises. There is a virtual publicity campaign going on across the country of one person, that he has transformed the state of Gujarat, as if in other states no work has been done. But, if you go there and see the real picture, then you will find to your amazement, that the poor and the minorities are sacrificing out there," she said.

"The children who belong from the poor family are dying because of hunger and starvation, the adivasi community are facing tremendous problem. The women are facing torture in different forms in that state. While there are few industrialists, who are reaping the benefits. Tell me if you will vote such people who believe in creating discord between brothers, who believe in inciting violence amongst communities?," Gandhi added.
