The Congress Party on Friday criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for inviting his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif for a meeting in Ufa, Russia, claiming that the latter alone cannot do anything to improve relations with India, as the deciding forces in Islamabad were the army and the ISI.

"A martyr of the ceasefire violation was given tribute in the morning and 40 minutes after that Prime Minister Modi met Nawaz Sharif in Ufa. This is the same government which used to say that they will teach a lesson to Pakistan, and today the Prime Minister is meeting Nawaz Sharif without even an invitation. We would like to ask, what made the Prime Minister invite Nawaz Sharif for talks?" Congress leader Meem Afzal said at a press briefing.

"After so many ceasefire violations, and a threat to use nuclear weapons, Prime Minister Modi invites Nawaz Sharif for a meeting.Nawaz Sharif cannot bring about a change in Pakistan: the deciding forces in Pakistan are the army and the ISI. Nawaz Sharif alone cannot do anything to improve relations with India," he added.

Bilateral talks between Prime Minister Modi and his counterpart Nawaz Sharif are currently underway on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Ufa.
