Former Chief of Afghanistan's Intelligence Agency, National Directorate of Security (NDS), Rahmatullah Nabil, on Sunday announced the launch of a new political party in Afghanistan.

While addressing a gathering in Kabul, Nabil said that the new party will be named Mehwar.

Nabil stated that the party is starting off with seventy-four members, adding that party aims to fight against discrimination and insisted that the party wasn't formed to seek a role within the government of national unity.

The party was formed by some key players in Afghan politics like first Vice-President General Abdul Rashid Dostum, Balkh governorand Jamiat-e-Islami Chief Executive Ata Mohammad Noor, and Deputy Chief Executive Haji Mohammad Mohaqiq. They formed the new party almost three months after a political coalition.

According to them, Mehwar is established to counter the poltical instability of the National Unity Government (NUG).

The NUG is beset with internal disagreements and discord and facing a resurgent insurgency. Their discord stems from the vagueness of the U.S.-devised power-sharing agreement that frames the government and the widely diverging interpretations of their powers and authority.
