The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Friday banned the use of disposable plastic, which is especially used in grocery and plastic tea cups like items in Delhi and National Capital Region (NCR) with effect from January 1, 2017.
A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Swatanter Kumar gave the directions for the enforcement of the ban.
The NGT also directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Delhi Development Authority and other public authorities including NCT of Delhi to take fast steps for reduction and utilisation of dumped waste.
The green body also said that the Okhla plant will continue to operate subject to the order of the tribunal.
The National Green Tribunal had earlier lashed out at Delhi government for showing 'laxity' while dealing with alarming situation of air pollution and smog in the city.
