Young Australian batsman Nic Maddinson may reportedly carve himself a place in the squad for the return Ashes series if he delivers a promising performance in the Twenty20 game against India next Thursday.
With 890 first-class runs at an average of 63.57 in the eight months since his Sheffield Shield recall, the New South Wales left-handed batter has appeared on the cusp of delivering on the 'next big thing' tag he earned with a record-breaking century during his domestic debut at the age of 18.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, although Maddinson is not in the one-day squad for the seven ODIs, he has a weight of first-class runs behind him and can earn a national call-up for the return Ashes series if he can continue his prolific scoring from the Australia A tours of the United Kingdom and South Africa in the winter.
Maddinson effectively replaces David Warner, snubbed for the T20 and one-day squads to India, but who is another batsman who was given his start for Australia in the shorter forms, the report added.
