Advocate R.K. Kapoor, the petitioner in the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC) case, on Friday expressed hope that the Supreme Court would rule in their favour and strike down the provisions which affect the independence of judiciary in today's ruling.

"The independence of the judiciary is its basic structure and it is provided for in the Constitution also. We feel that the judgement will be in our favour and (hope that) provisions affecting the independence of judiciary will be struck down," Kapoor told ANI here.

The apex court will pronounce its judgement on the pleas challenging the constitutional validity of NJAC, which brought an end to the two-decade-old collegium system of judges appointing judges in the higher judiciary.

A five-judge bench headed by Justice J S Khehar had reserved its judgement on July 15 after a marathon hearing for 31 days on the issue of validity of the 99th Constitutional amendment and the NJAC Act.

The verdict is likely to be announced today at 10:30 am.
