Pop-sensation Pink had a powerful response to Grammy President Neil Portnow's comment about how female artists "need to step up".

After Sunday's Grammys were dominated by men, Portnow had a controversial response to the unbalanced results.

He said, "I think it has to begin with women who have the creativity in their hearts and souls - who want to be musicians, who want to be engineers, who want to be producers, who want to be part of the industry on the executive level - to step up."

Pink, who was nominated for Best Pop Solo Performance took to social media and slammed his comments by writing, "Women in music don't need to 'step up' - women have been stepping since the beginning of time. Stepping up, and also stepping aside. Women OWNED music this year. They've been KILLING IT. And every year before this".

The musician also shared a personal message on social media about the issue.

"When we celebrate and honor the talent and accomplishments of women, and how much women step up every year, against all odds, we show the next generation of women and girls and boys and men what it means to be equal and what it looks like to be fair," noted Pink.

On Sunday night's telecast, Pink was nominated for Best Pop Performance thanks to her song 'What About Us'. While four women received nominations in the category, the lone male nominee Ed Sheeran won for 'Shape of You'.

Ahead of the star-studded event, presenter Janelle Monae tweeted a statistic from a USC study, "A total of 90.7% of nominees between 2013 and 2018 were male, meaning just 9.3% were women. #TimesUp #Grammys.
