The Centre on Friday refused to intervene in the ongoing tussle between Supreme Court judges.

According to sources in the government the matter raised by the four apex court judges were judiciary specific and did not merit third party intervention.

"Our judiciary is reputed, judiciary is independent and it has credibility. The people have faith in it; any internal issue of this nature will be resolved by the judiciary itself, without intervention of third party," said government sources.

Earlier in the day, the four judges of the Supreme Court said that they have discharged a debt to the nation by issuing an appeal to the nation to save the institution (Supreme Court).

Justices Madan B. Lokur, Kurien Joseph, Ranjan Gogoi and Jasti Chelameswar addressed the press conference on the lawns of Justice Chelameswar's official residence.

They made a reference to a letter that they had written to the Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra in which they highlighted the corrosion and compromise taking place within the institution of the judiciary and especially within the portals of the Supreme Court.
