Congress leader Ambika Soni on Monday came out in support of Lady Shri Ram College student Gurmehar Kaur after she logged a complaint with the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) that she was being threatened with rape through social media.

"Nobody should be allowed to give threats of rape to anyone like this, especially to a family who comes from Kargil background. A strict and strong action should be taken on this and soon, said Soni.

Speaking about the issues raised by Kaur, the daughter of Kargil braveheart Captain M. Singh Soni said, "Issues like this on Kargil martyr family should be taken seriously, we should feel proud on families like them not disrespecting them. The coward and anti-national people who give threats should be punished and not spared".

Meanwhile, the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has written to the Delhi Police demanding swift action against the miscreants who had harassed Gurmehar.

DCW Chief Swati Maliwal said, "She (Kaur) has sent us screenshots of how some boys are continuously threatening her with rape online. The DCW has taken cognisance of the situation and we have written a letter to the Delhi Police seeking an immediate FIR against these miscreants so that they are put behind bars."

A clash had broken out between activist of the All India Students Association ( AISA) and Akhil Bharatiya Vidhyarthi Parishad ( ABVP) on February 21 after the members of the latter staged a protest outside Ramjas College against an event that had Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Umar Khalid as a speaker.

According to the college authorities, the event was cancelled to maintain peace on the campus.
