Norway has said it will send military personnel to Syria to help the United Nations eliminate President Bashar al-Assad's chemical weapons arsenal.
Norwegian Foreign Minister Borge Brende said that they will send a civilian cargo ship and Navy frigate to Syrian ports to pick up the weapons and carry them elsewhere for destruction, News24 reports.
The UN's Organisation for the Prevention of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) has been working out a plan for destroying the stockpiles.
According to the report, 50 servicemen usually accompany a Norwegian frigate.
Brende said he was aware that the operation is not risk-free, but was concerned on leaving the weapons in Syria would pose a bigger threat.
