More and more working class people are apparently choosing bikes over other vehicles to get to their work places, it has been revealed.

According to the latest figures, there has been a 22.5 percent increase in the number of workers signing up for the 'Cycle to Work' bike-purchase scheme through their companies in the past year, the Daily Express reported.

Initially, when the Government's tax-friendly scheme was launched in Britain in 2013, 44,000 had opted for it.

But the bike boom kept on going and now over half a million people have benefited from the scheme, which can knock up to 42 percent off the cost of a bicycle.

Steve Edgell, chairman of the 'Cycle to Work' Alliance, an umbrella group which reported the figures, said that with rail fares continuing to rise above inflation, the "hugely encouraging" figures show that there is a popular, affordable alternative to train travel - commuting to work by bike.
