Obama congratulates Modi on emphatic poll win

U.S. President Barack Obama telephoned Indian prime minister-designate Narendra Modi on Friday and congratulated him on his "emphatic election victory".

According to reports, Obama told Modi that the largest democracy in the world has given a "decisive mandate".

He said that he wished that under Narendra Modi's leadership, India will contribute significantly at the global level.

Both leaders reportedly also discussed the India-U.S. Strategic Partnership and the prevailing global economic situation.

Friday's conversation was the first between Modi and the American leadership since 2005 when the Gujarat chief minister was denied a U.S. visa due to his alleged complicity in the 2002 riots in the state.

Earlier, British Prime Minister David Cameron, Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Afghan President Hamid Karzai, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also congratulated Modi on his overwhelming win in the general elections.
