A privately-chartered Russian cargo aircraft crashed into the Bay of Bengal this morning, killing one person and injuring at least three others.

The crash site was about half a kilometre off Cox's Bazar, at the estuary of the Bay and Bakkhali river.

The Russian-owned True Aviation Limited's aircraft took off from Cox's Bazar airport around 9.30 a.m., reports the Dawn.

The aircraft was carrying shrimp fry from Cox's Bazar to Jessore.

Minutes after take-off, it crashed into the sea, Sadhon Kumar Mohanta, the airport's manager, said.

Fisherman Sadhon Mia Majhi, an eyewitness, said he did not see any fire.
