Former England batsman Dennis Amiss hopes that lessons could be learnt from the horrifying head injury suffered by Australian batsman Phillip Hughes, who died after being hit on the head by a bouncer delivery during Sheffield match at the SCG.

Amiss, one of the first batsmen to wear a cricket helmet, said that the head is the most vulnerable place on the body and it needs to be protected as much as possible. He further said that this rare injury was the most serious one there had been, the Mirror reported.

Former England batsman Amiss was a regular user of a modified motorcycle helmet during World Series Cricket in the 1970s after taking a blow to the back of the head against Michael Holding.

According to him, helmets have to be improved again to offer even more protection around the head as it is the most vital area.
