An 'overt ouster' of Pakistan's Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif may prompt the United States government to issue democracy related sanctions on foreign assistance, says a report by the U.S. Congress.
The sanctions may include a huge break in American aid programmes to the country since 9/11, reported the Dawn.
The report also says that increasing influence of the army on foreign politics could affect Pakistan's relations with India.
Many people see the Sharif government as weak due to the ongoing protests, says the report.
It also represents a weakening of the country's democracy that has seen three military coups in 67 years of independence.
