Owing to the financial strain of their parents due to the drought situation in Marathwada region, at least 25 girls belonging to Banjara community from Warul Tanda village of Gewarai tehesil in Beed district have decided to not get married this year.
The total population of Warul Tanda village is 3000 and a large number of village workers have already migrated to neighbouring districts in search of jobs. Only young girls and old family members are staying at home.
"My parents hardly make 30,000 a year as this area has been drought-hit since 2-3 years," said Savita, a Majalgaon area resident.
The girls fear that their parents might take extreme step of committing suicide if they are not able to get their daughters married.
Mounting debts, arising out of crop failure due to prolonged drought, have hit farmers hard in the region. They are struggling to get their daughters married. Rising debts have forced many farmers to commit suicide.
