The Australians have reportedly rated South Africa as only the fifth likeliest team to bag the coveted World Cup trophy that has always eluded them, following the team's loss to India in their Pool B clash on Sunday.

Readers of prestigious Australian newspaper the Sydney Morning Herald's website have rated the South African team as only fifth likeliest now to win the 2015 World Cup.

The poll on the website asked a simple question about who would win the Cricket World Cup and almost 50,000 respondents solidly supported the Australians, who received 37 percent of the vote, Sport24 reported.

Australia was followed by the already dangerous-looking New Zealand, which won 22 percent of the vote, and then India, with 21 percent of the vote.

However, with South Africa having made such an unconvincing start to the lengthy tournament, after a laboured win over Zimbabwe and then the unexpectedly heavy India loss, poll participants have gleefully stuck the knife in.

The voters have even displayed superior support, nine percent, for one of the minnow nations -Afghanistan, Scotland, Ireland and United Arab Emirates- to lift the trophy.

South Africa then come in at eight percent, followed by the least supported teams, not more than one percent in any instance, -Pakistan, Sri Lanka and England, the report added.
