An Australian media report has reiterated its claim that swimming great Ian Thorpe had undergone treatment for his decade-long battle with depression and alcohol issues despite denials from his management team.
As revealed in Telegraph.com.au, Thorpe had been in hospital since Wednesday for shoulder surgery and was also being treated for depression and alcohol issues, although his management, SEL, released a statement saying that the swimmer's hospital visit was only to treat his injured shoulder.
The report mentioned that protecting the five-time gold medallist's brand and endorsements has always been a delicate consideration, although it added that there is no shame in his current predicament.
The report also said that as Thorpe had always dealt with personal problems privately, therefore his management company made no mention of his current battles, adding that Thorpe's closest associates, including broadcaster Alan Jones, have confirmed the seriousness of the swimming champion's illness.
Another of his closest friends said that Thorpe was having treatment both in Sydney this week and overseas, the report added.
