Pakistan's Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has ordered an inquiry into a New York Times report that accused the IT company Axact of running a massive fake

degree scam.

According to Dawn, Nisar directed the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to see whether the contents of the story were true and whether the company was involved in any illegal business, said an

interior ministry spokesman.

Axact's websites have been accused of offering online degrees in various courses like civil engineering and nursing.

There are huge endorsements on the website that boast of one of the "most renowned faculty in the world", according to the New York Times.

The university campus is restricted to the computer servers and the degrees have no true accreditation.

Yasir Jamshaid, a quality control official who left Axact in October said that it is not a company as customers believe. It was only about money, said Jamshaid.

Axact authorities responded to a list of detailed questions, and rejected all accusations as "baseless, substandard, maligning, and defamatory".

The company works from Karachi in Pakistan where it has over 2,000 people employed.
