The Council of Complaints (COC) of the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has imposed a fine of Rupees five lakhs on Pakistan's Channel 24 following a complaint lodged by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's daughter Maryam Nawaz Sharif.
Maryam had filed a complaint saying that during a talk-show on June 10, the channel had shown a picture claiming that she was presiding over a meeting of federal secretaries and running the affairs of the government as the prime minister was in the UK for health reasons, reports the Dawn.
She however, claimed that the picture was around two years old when she was heading the Prime Minister's youth programme.
Since no representative of Channel 24 appeared before the council, the channel was fined with Rs. 500,000 and directed to apologise by the COC Islamabad, headed by Shamim Humayum
It also imposed a fine of Rs 500,000 each on several TV channels for airing incorrect news about the marriage of former cricketer and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan in July this year.
These channels on July 12 repeatedly showed a news that the 63-year-old Khan had entered into third marriage in London.
The channels that have been fined include Dunya News, Geo News, Neo News, Royal News, Khyber News, Channel 24, Channel 92, News One, Such TV, Roze News,Channel 5 and Geo Tez.
