Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday greeted the nation on the occasion of birthday of Guru Nanak Dev.
"I bow to the venerable Guru Nanak Devji on the occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti. The life and teachings of Guru Nanak Devji inspire us eternally. Let us follow the path of compassion, truth and peace as shown by him," Prime Minister Modi tweeted.
"Today is also a day to pledge to embrace the path of service and work towards a just and equal society, free from any kind of social evils," he added.
President Pranab Mukherjee and Vice President Hamid Ansari have also greeted the nation on the occasion.
The President said that Guru Nanak's message of compassion and equality of all human beings is of timeless relevance.
The Vice President said that Guru Nanak's divine message of truth, compassion and tolerance has eternal relevance for liberation of humanity from violence, bigotry and injustice.
Guru Nanak Jayanti is being celebrated today to mark the birth anniversary of the first Sikh Guru.
On the occasion, devotees throng to Gurudwaras to remember and pay homage to their gurus. Akhand Path is also performed at Gurudwaras.
