Police recover explosives from a house in Jharkhand's Giridih District

Police have recovered explosives from a house in Jharkhand's Giridih District.

The explosives were discovered on the basis of a tip off received from intelligence officials.

Special Forces seized the explosives after the cordoning of the house and restricting public access to it.

Giridih's Superintendent of Police Kranti Kumar said: "We were told that in the area between Belwaghati and Chakai, some explosives were being delivered to the Naxalites."

"Accordingly, we sent our forces and recovered 50 gelatine sticks, 1600 meters wire and detonators. An investigation is on and we are trying to out to whom the explosives were being sent, and from where they got the explosives," he added.

The general elections this year have been marred by violence and spate of Maoists attacks.

The Maoists have killed police and politicians, targeted government buildings and railway tracks in an insurgency that has killed thousands since the late 1960s.

The Maoists say they are fighting for the rights of the poor and landless, control some of India's mineral-rich areas and operate in large areas of the eastern, central and southern countryside.

The rebels are estimated to number 7000 hardcore fighters in nearly a third of India's 630 districts.
