President Trump's aide comment on West Bank shock Israel

A rift has been created between Washington and Jerusalem after an American diplomat described the Western Wall in Jerusalem's Old City as part of the West Bank.

This new development happened days ahead of a visit by President Donald Trump on an ultra-sensitive status of Jerusalem.

U.S. President Trump has shown his willingness to resolve the Israel-Palestine conflict but the Israeli Prime Minister's Office said it was shocked by the comments and asked the United States to explain what was meant by them.

"Israel is convinced that this statement is contrary to the position of President [Donald] Trump, as expressed in his firm opposition to the most recent UN Security Council Resolution," the Israeli Prime Minister's Office said in a written statement Monday.

"These comments were not authorized by the White House. They do not reflect the US position, and certainly not the President's position, " CNN quoted White House statement.

President Trump will visit Israel on May 22 and he will visit the Western Wall and meet with President Reuven Rivlin and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu . President will also pay a visit to Yad Vashem, Israel's Holocaust memorial.
