Prithviraj Chavan takes responsibility for 'disappointing' performance in Maharashtra

Former Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan on Sunday took responsibility for the poor performance of the Congress in the state assembly elections.

Chavan said the performance by the Congress in the elections has been disappointing.

"I had taken the initiative in these elections and thus I am responsible for the poor showing in the polls," Chavan told the media here.

"There has been some improvement in the result since the Lok Sabha elections but it was not as much as was expected," he added.

Chavan also congratulated the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on its good performance in the polls.

"No party has won the elections with a clear majority. Having said that, I congratulate the BJP for winning the highest number of seats in the state," Chavan said.

Chavan further said that his party will hope to come back stronger in the next elections.

"We shall hold discussions of the future and will hope to come back stronger," he said.

The Congress has so far managed to win only around 44 seats while the BJP has bagged 71 seats and is leading in 51 others.
