The Punjab Health Department on Tuesday raided a factory in Ludhiana involved in making fake dietary supplements using the names of prominent international manufacturers.
A health department team found fake health supplements worth lakhs of rupees being manufactured illegally in large quantities by an unregistered company.
"A team raided the factory and found ingredients in large numbers being stacked. They contain starch, milk powder, flavours of vanilla and chocolate. A few empty jars of medicines have also been found. We assume that food supplements are being prepared by mixing all these ingredients. Today we are collecting the samples for examination," said drug inspector Anil Khosla.
Khosla stated that the factory did not have a valid registration and license from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and added that the future course of action will depend on the samples' result.
"We will examine the samples after which the report will come. Based on the report, an enquiry will be initiated and as the investigation proceeds, further required action will be taken," he said.
The supplements were being sold to several gyms and it was found that allopathic medicines were also used as ingredients in the making.
The team carrying out the raid also recovered medicines to increase the appetite and weight gain or loss powders.
