Amid the ongoing clashes between the police and supporters of controversial godman Sant Rampal, the latter on Tuesday reportedly used firearms to keep the police at bay
and prevent him from arresting the godman.
The police, while attempting to storm the fortified ashram of Rampal, used tear gas shells, water cannons and batons to disperse his supporters, who allegedly fired back. Several people, including some
media persons, were injured in the incident.
According to reports, at least 12 followers, including women and children, tried to self-immolate themselves when security personnel comprising of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Rapid Action Force
(RAF) and Haryana Police personnel, mounted pressure on them to execute the direction of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
Rampal faces contempt of court for skipping judicial proceedings before a Sessions Court in Haryana's Hisar district on November 5, citing medical reasons.
Earlier in the day, the Punjab and Haryana High Court issued a fresh non-bailable warrant against Rampal for contempt of court. His supporters fortified his mission campus in Chandigarh, demanding his release.
Rampal has been charged with murder, attempt to murder and other charges under various Sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) in 2006 after his followers attacked villagers.
He was released on bail, which has now been cancelled due to his absence during the trials.
Rampal's followers had clashed with the villagers in Rohtak last year, killing three people.
