Reacting to Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav's statement that if his party came to power he would amend the law awarding capital punishment to rapists, Social Activist Ranjana Kumari on Thursday said that the latter had always been working against women and had often made many patriarchal comments.
"Mulayam singh has always been working against women, and he has often made very patriarchal comments. Because of him women's bill was not passed, and now he is saying such things," said Ranjana.
"He may not know that those who commit this crime have to be sent to life imprisonment. The whole nation is going through this ill and serious crime. Women of this country should go against him and his party now," she said.
"People should feel scared before even thinking of committing such crimes but by this type of a comment, he is encouraging rapists. Women should boycott his political party to teach him a lesson," she added.
She further said Yadav did not respect women and was only doing his vote bank politics adding that women should also play vote bank politics with him to teach him lesson.
Earlier in the day, Yadav said it was wrong to give capital punishment to rapists involved in the gang rape of two persons in Mumbai in July and August of last year, adding that boys ' make mistakes' at times.
Speaking at a rally here, Yadav questioned the need for a court of the land to hand down capital punishment to the three men involved in the two crimes.
"We will bring changes in the law when we come to power," Yadav said.
