Rio 2016: After Dutee Chand's exit, all eyes now on Odia sprinter Srabani Nanda

Rio de Janerio, Aug 14 (ANI): After Indian sprinter Dutee Chand failed to qualify in the 100 m event at the ongoing Rio Olympics, all eyes will now be on Odia sprinter Srabani Nanda, who will run in 200 meter race on August 15.

Dutee, who finished with a timing of 11.69 seconds, failed to qualify after she finished seventh in Heat 5 of the qualifying heats on Saturday.

26-year-old Srabani, who is from Odisha's Kandhamal district, had clocked 23.02 seconds in women's 200-meter event here at XXVI International Meeting G. Kosanov in June to become a part of the 119-member Indian Olympic contingent.

Her parents are very happy on her amazing feat and believe that their daughter can bring laurels for the nation, especially on the occasion of Independence Day.

Talking to ANI, Srabani's father Banabihari Nanda, who took VRS from his regular job and tried his hand at several things before starting a sports club in Odisha, said, "I am feeling very proud that our daughter is a part of the prestigious Olympics event. I am very happy."

"I have come here to encourage her and all the other Indian athletes. I wish they win many medals for the country. I am expecting that she (Srabani) would reach the finals and win a medal for the nation. I always inspired her for a gold mission," he added.

Srabani's mother Subasini Rayaguru said she wants her daughter to return home with a medal.

"I am very happy that my daughter has reached here. I only want that she returns to India with a medal," Subasini told ANI.

The 26-year-old Indian sprinter secured a gold medal and silver medal in 200 and 100 metre sprint respectively at the 2016 South Asian Games, which were held in Assam.

She had also helped India win a bronze medal in women's 4x100 metre relay event of the 2010 Commonwealth Games with a timing of 45.25 seconds at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Delhi on October 12, 2010.
