Robbie Savage to compete in marathon to raise money for Alzheimer's Society in dad's memory

Former Welsh football star Robbie Savage is reportedly set to tackle Sunday's Great North Run in memory of his dad and to raise money for UK's Alzheimer's Society.

According to the Mirror, the former Leicester City, Blackburn Rovers and Dancing on Ice star spent much of his father's final months at his bedside as he battled Pick's disease, adding that by the time Colin Savage died aged just 64, he did not even recognise his son.

Stating that his father's condition was even more devastating for him as Savage Sr. used to have a habit of looking straight at people, Savage revealed that although he never had to force himself to see his father, the condition deteoriated to the point where he had to leave his father's bedside in tears.

The report mentioned that Savage's father, a mechanical engineer and factory manager, was struck by Pick's, an early onset dementia, at 58, shortly after he retired.

Meanwhile, the report mentioned that the 38-year-old Savage, who is still recovering from a leg he broke playing for Blackburn Rovers six years ago, is prepared to smash his pain barrier to compete in the half-marathon despite having no training, in order to raise money for the society.

According to Savage, although he is aware that his shin will hurt a lot while he would be running the 13-mile event, he is determined to make it as he believes that his father will be waiting at the finish.
