England captain Wayne Rooney has said that he would make history and become the nation's greatest ever goalscorer, surpassing former midfielder Sir Bobby Charlton.
Rooney has scored 41 goals for England with Jimmy Greaves, on 44, Gary Lineker, 48 and Sir Bobby Charlton with 49 ahead of him.
With San Marino on Thursday at Wembley and then Estonia away as England's next two opponents, skipper Rooney is looking to fill his boots and is confident Charlton's record will be broken, The Daily Express reported.
Rooney said that it is there for him to overtake them all, adding that he feels that he is capable of doing that. He said that he is three goals short of Greaves, and surpassing him would be a huge honour for him and he is hopeful of doing that.
Rooney said that he is confident in himself and believes that he would do it, but added that the game on Thursday is more important than him scoring four or five goals.
The skipper said that it would be great to do it, adding that he had never thought when he came into this England team that he would be best goalscorer. He said that it would be massive for him and make his family proud.
Rooney said that he wants to do it and is hopeful that one day he would be sat there having won it.
The Manchester United striker also said that he would happily forego the record if it meant England finally won a trophy.
