A top Saudi Arabia cleric has reportedly said that Saudi women are becoming negligent by visiting male doctors without being accompanied by a male guardian.

Qays Al Mubarak a member of the Council of Senior Ulema (Muslim scholars) commented that it was against Islam for the women to consult male doctors in the absence of a male guardian.

According to the Gulf News, Mubarak's remark were made in the light of the recent death of a university student after paramedics were denied access to her campus since they were not accompanied by a male guardian, or close relative.

He also said that a medical check-up could include a woman showing parts of her body to a doctor, which was not permissible unless urgent.
