The Supreme Court on Monday issued a notice to the Centre on a petition seeking directions to the government to ensure that wages under the MNREGA are paid without delay.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, while presenting the Union Budget for fiscal 2015-16 in the Lok Sabha, had said that the government at the Centre is committed to ensuring employment through MNREGA.

"We will focus on improving the quality and effectiveness of activities under MNREGA. I have made an initial allocation of Rs 34,699 crores for this programme," he added.
