Shahi Imam should reveal names of AAP leaders who sought support: Digvijay Singh

Congress leader Digvijay Singh on Friday said that former Jama Masjid Shahi Imam Syed Ahmed Bukhari should reveal the names of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders who had approached him seeking support for the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections.

"When Bukhari had issued a fatwa in 2004 to support Atal Bihari Vajpayee, why didn't Arun Jaitley comment on that. It is being said that the AAP leaders had approached Bukhari asking for support, if so then let him tell who had come," Singh said.

He further said that religious extremism is disturbing the communal harmony in the country.

"I am saying this once again that communal Hindu, communal Muslim, communal Christian or communal Sikh, disturb the harmony in the country. Now the question is why did Sonia Gandhi visit him in 2014? I don't think it was the right thing. Congress has always been against communal Hindus and communal Muslims," he said.

Bukhari had earlier in the day appealed to Muslims to support the AAP in tomorrow's assembly polls to help form a secular government in Delhi.

The religious leader had endorsed the Congress during last year's Lok Sabha polls, which saw the party being routed after 10 years in power.

The Aam Aadmi Party, which is optimistic about forming the government in Delhi, is believed to be in a direct fight with the Bharatiya Janata Party this time.

It has also found support from the All India Imam Association (AIIA), West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and CPI (M) general secretary Prakash Karat.

A total of 673 candidates are in the fray for the 70-member Delhi Assembly which goes to polls tomorrow. The results will be declared on February 10.
