Sharapova ousted by Wozniacki in fourth round of US Open

Maria Sharapova suffered a shock fourth round exit at the US Open as former world number one Caroline Wozniacki stunned the fifth seeded Russian on a stiflingly hot day at Flushing Meadows.

Wozniacki, seeded 10th, won 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 to advance to her first Grand Slam quarterfinal since 2012. The Dane will next play Italy's Sara Errani.

Wozniacki said that it means so much to her, adding that it's been a bit up and down for her this year. She said that it is a new year and she has gotten older, and hopefully a little wiser, The BBC reported.

The Dane said that she feels good and comfortable when she plays out there. She added that the crowd was amazing and it is just so much fun to play out there again on the big court.

And she also said that training to run the New York Marathon in November was aiding her game, adding that she thinks it will help her a lot. She said that it was a tough battle out there against Sharapova, adding that it was humid and hot and she had to change her dress.

Wozniacki has slipped from the very top of the game after finishing as year-end world number one in 2010 and 2011, but in recent months there have been signs of resurgence.

Sharapova said that she thought Wozniacki played really well, and added that the Dane made her hit a lot of balls.

The Russian said that Wozniacki is a great retriever, especially in these types of conditions. She added that she just felts like she maybe went for a little too much.
