The National Human Rights Commission has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police of Jammu and Kashmir seeking a detailed report in Shujaat Bukhari killing.
Bukhari, a senior journalist and editor of 'Rising Kashmir' was shot dead by terrorists in Srinagar's Press Colony area on June 14.
Taking suo motu cognizance of a media report seeking swift probe into Bukhari's killing, the Commission asked the state government to provide details of the attacks made on the media persons during last two years.
It also asked the status of relief or rehabilitation provided to the victims and their families.
The NHRC will also inquire about special measures taken by the state government to stop such incidents in Jammu and Kashmir.
It said that the way, Bukhari was killed by the miscreants, indicated that the media persons, even those who have been provided police protection by the State Government, are not safe in the valley.
It further said, "This is a case of violation of Right to Life of the victim and the incident is causing serious threat to free speech and freedom of press in the State.
