Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena has reportedly reinstated former Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake two years after she was removed by the previous dispensation over corruption allegations.
The corruption charges were leveled against her by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa after she passed some legal verdicts that went against his government. She had categorically denied any wrongdoing, reported the BBC.
She was removed in January 2013 after being impeached on the recommendation of a parliamentary committee dominated by Rajapaksa's supporters. The UN's Human Rights Council had termed the removal "an assault on judicial independence."
Sirisena's officer termed her removal a "procedural error."
The former attorney-general, Mohan Peiris, who replaced Bandaranayake has been asked to leave.
However, her return is only temporary as she is set to retire now that her name has been cleared.
