New Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has revealed that long periods of inactivity involved in international management could have driven him to distraction and that is why he did not want the England manager's job offered to him.

According to The Independent, the Chelsea manager spoke about the Football Association's approach to him after Steve McClaren's dismissal in November 2007 and while the FA have always insisted that the man they subsequently appointed, Fabio Capello, was their first choice for the job, Mourinho's version of events contradicts that.

As for England's performances, Mourinho once again lamented the absence of a feeder-club system in English football that would give young players an opportunity to play together in a competitive environment, the report said.

The manager said that in Portugal and Spain, the second team plays in the championship and it is very productive.
