Spot fixing: BCCI working committee meet underway at Chennai

Amidst rising tensions among the cricketing fraternity, the all awaited Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Working Committee meeting is underway at Chennai, where all eyes will be fixed on BCCI president N. Srinivasan's stand post IPL corruption drama.

According to television reports, BCCI vice-president Arun Jaitley, former IPL Chairman Rajeev Shukla and former Joint Secretary of BCCI Anurag Thakur are taking part in the crucial meet through video conference.

The chorus for Srinivasan's ouster as BCCI President has grown louder with BCCI heavyweights appearing to be firm regarding his resignation. Union Minister and former BCCI boss Sharad Pawar has also joined in the attack.

The Sports Ministry has put pressure on Srinivasan, and said that he should tender his resignation on moral grounds, pending the outcome of the inquiry.

According to reports, the meeting will deliberate on the conditions laid down by Srinivasan for stepping aside. So far, Srinivasan has been refusing to resign from the post of BCCI president saying he had done nothing wrong.

His son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan, owner of the IPL team Chennai Superkings has been arrested by the police along with some others on charges of betting during the IPL matches.

Ahead of the crucial BCCI meet, IPL Chairman Rajeev Shukla has resigned from the post. He took the decision to quit saying that he felt it necessary to do so in the light of the recent developments concerning BCCI, including the resignations of BCCI secretary Sanjay Jagdale and treasurer Ajay Shirke.

Jagdale who a day earlier resigned as the secretary of the BCCI said, "I cannot say about other but I resigned on the basis of my own thinking. I felt that I should not stay here any longer."

"Nobody asked me to leave, nobody influenced me, I just felt that the things that are happening, I don't want to be a part of them and I thought the time had come for me to leave," he added.

The May 16 arrest of three cricketers, including former test bowler S. Sreesanth, have exposed Indian cricket's soft underbelly.

The BCCI has set up a three-member panel to investigate the allegations.
