Third Pencak Silat State Championship has been organised for Kashmiri students in Srinagar on Tuesday. Students from different schools are participating in the tournament, which primarily revolves around punching, kicking and throwing.
"The theme of this championship is to follow the new calendar. Next month we have sub-junior and under 12 national championships (to be held in Bhopal). We are selecting our best probables. For this, we have called Kashmir division students," Iqbal Ahmed, the organiser, told ANI.
"The same championship will take place in Jammu in a few days as well. Kashmir's best lot will then compete to make Jammu and Kashmir's best team to represent the state in competitions. Career-wise, a recognised game by the sports council helps a student get each and every possible benefit. One learns self-defence, as well as health and fitness, is maintained," Iqbal added.
When asked students how they are benefitting from the game, one student said with the help of this tournament they can go for play nationals and even internationals.
"The certificates are valued and can be used in education and job. It will keep us both mentally and physically fit as well. Students should come for this tournament. More the students participate, the better it will be for them in the future," another student said.
One more student said, "It is an open state championship wherein anybody can participate. It gives opportunities to students. It is a really good game especially for girls for their self-defence. If you play it for the first time you may lose but you must keep the spirit and you will do better.
