St. Lucia renames stadium after Windies T20 skipper

In an effort to honour West Indies skipper Darren Sammy for leading his side to the World T20 title, the island's main cricket ground in St. Lucia will be renamed after his name.

The Beausejour Cricket Ground will now be known as Darren Sammy National Cricket Ground, with one of the stands set to be renamed in honour of wicketkeeper-batsman Johnson Charles.

Jubilant with the announcement made by Prime Minister Kenny D. Anthony at a welcome reception in St Lucia, Sammy thanked the locals for their respect and admiration.

"I am truly honoured, I am humbled and blessed. Thank you, we always know St. Lucians love their own and the love and respect and admiration," the 32-year-old was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) said that the duo deserved to achieve the honour for the hard work and dedication that they had put in for the team's recent success.

"The honour is fitting and we salute the players," the WICB said.

The Beausejour Stadium, which holds a seating capacity of 15,000, has hosted international matches since 2002, including a floodlight ODI against Zimbabwe in 2006.

Earlier, the Caribbean side won the T20 format's pinnacle event after thrashing England by four wickets in the finals at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday.

The match also saw Carlos Brathwaite smash England's Ben Stokes for four consecutive sixes in the last over to win the coveted prize for the second time.
