State memorial service to honour late Hughes called off post talks with CA, family

A state memorial service that was meant to be held in Sydney for late cricket Phillip Hughes has now been called off post consultations with Cricket Australia and the late batsman's family.

The 25-year-old batsman passed away two weeks ago after he was struck in the neck by a cricket ball during a Sheffield Shield match on November 25.

New South Wales Premier Mike Baird said that the planned state funeral was called off following consultation with Cricket Australia and the Hughes family. A short ceremony would be held at the Sydney Cricket Ground before the start of the fourth Test between Australia and India, News.com.au reported.

Baird said that there was no need for the memorial service after Hughes' funeral in his hometown of Macksville. He said that last Wednesday's funeral in Macksville was a wonderful service and a fitting tribute to Hughes' life and it was a privilege to be a part of it.

Baird claimed that they consulted with the family and with CA, and all parties felt that given the enormous outpouring of support at last Wednesday's funeral, a state memorial service would no longer need to be held.
