A two-day conference of State Social Welfare Board Chairpersons begins today in the Andaman and Nicobar islands.
Lt Governor, Lt Gen Bhupinder Singh will inaugurate the conference at Port Blair this morning. This is the first time that such a conference is being held in the islands.
About 25 chairpersond will attend the Port Blair conference.
On the eve of the conference, Central Social Welfare Board Chairperson, Prema Kariappa informed that the board will start a much needed women's help line to help women in distress.
She said the conference will discuss effective ways to tackle social problems like gender violence, alcoholism and child labour etc. It will explore ways of fostering meaningful coordination between state governments to ensure the empowerment of women.
